I got 5–10 stops in a row

What to do now

Before changing anything, check whether this length of streak is normal for your win rate. Use the calculator below.

A series of stops without a single win between them.

Protocol

  1. Check the streak length against the calculator.
  2. After 3 stops in a row: 30 minutes without trading.
  3. If you suspect the strategy is broken, test it on a fixed number of trades, not on the last five.

Checklist before the next trade

Is this streak normal?

Why this happens and what is dangerous

Wins and losses are mixed randomly. With a win rate under 50% long runs of losses are not an exception but a certainty over enough trades.

The danger is not the streak, it is the reaction: dropping a working system after bad luck, raising size to recover, or freezing. A series of 7 losses does not by itself prove that the strategy has stopped working.

This is a practical protocol for trading behavior, not medical advice or treatment, and not a promise of profit.

Losing streak: is this still normal?

For a win rate of 42% over 500 trades, a run of several losses in a row is expected. The calculator computes the exact probability for any win rate and trade count under the usual assumption that trades are independent. Real trades are not perfectly independent, so treat the result as a guide.

A streak that is far beyond what the calculator shows for your numbers is a reason to check the data and the rules, not to guess. Review whether the trades followed the plan first.

Questions and answers

Is 5 losses in a row normal in trading?

For many strategies yes. With a 45% win rate, a run of 5 losses is likely to appear several times in a few hundred trades. Use the calculator for your own numbers.

When should I stop using a strategy?

When a pre-defined rule says so, for example a drawdown beyond what the backtest allowed, or a statistically meaningful gap over a fixed number of trades. Not after a feeling.
