Crypto Fear & Greed Index: what it measures and how to use it
The Fear & Greed Index condenses the mood of the crypto market into one number from 0 to 100. Values near 0 mean extreme fear: investors are selling and worried. Values near 100 mean extreme greed: investors are buying aggressively and the market feels euphoric. This page shows today's value, how it changed over a day, a week and a month, a chart for the last year and a table of the last 30 days. The numbers come from alternative.me through its free public API, and the source is named next to every display.
How the index is built
According to its author, alternative.me, the index combines several factors: Bitcoin volatility and drawdowns (25%), market momentum and volume compared with the 30 and 90 day averages (25%), social media activity (15%), Bitcoin dominance (10%) and Google search trends (10%). A survey component (15%) is currently paused. The value is recalculated once a day. Because most of the inputs are tied to Bitcoin, the index describes the market as a whole, not one particular coin.
Zones and how to read the chart
We use the same zones as the source: 0 to 24 extreme fear, 25 to 44 fear, 45 to 55 neutral, 56 to 75 greed and 76 to 100 extreme greed. The one-year chart shades the zones, so you can see how long the market stayed in each of them, and the block below the chart counts the days. Hover the line to see the value for any date. A long stay in one zone is normal: the index often remains in greed during a rising market and in fear during a falling one.
What the index does not tell you
Sentiment is context. It does not say when a trend will end and it is not a buy or sell signal. We show it next to Radar and Liquidations so that you can see the mood of the market while you look at unusual activity on individual coins. We have not found that any single indicator on this site predicts price, and we test every idea on data before we rely on it.
Questions and answers
What is a good value of the Fear & Greed Index?
There is no good or bad value. It measures mood: low values mean fear, high values mean greed. What you do with that is your own decision.
How often does the index update?
Once a day. The page refreshes the data from the source regularly, but the value itself changes daily.
Does extreme fear mean the price will rise?
No. Extreme fear only says that the market is scared. Prices can keep falling or recover, and the index does not tell which.
